The Litany of Trust

Litany of Trust | How to Pray and PDF Download

Trust is hard.

The Litany of Trust is a wonderful way to grow in the virtue of trust. When I reflect on my prayer life, or conversations around faith that I’ve had with friends, the conversation can often come back to a similar theme: trust. For any relationship to be real or meaningful, trust has to be at the core of it. Especially in our relationship with our holy Father.

But trust can be hard, and it’s ok to admit that it’s hard. We might have had past relationship wounds which can become a barrier to trust. We may have been taught about the facts of our faith, but haven’t made the jump to trusting the person. We may believe in the Lord, but haven’t yet made the leap to let go of our own selfish will. It takes time, and it takes faith.

It’s hard to trust completely, and learning to do that is a lifelong process. Thankfully, we’ve been given a new prayer to help us do this - The Litany of Trust.

What is the Litany of Trust?

The Litany of Trust was written by Sr. Faustina Maria Pia, SV, a member of Sisters of Life in Suffren, New York. Sister Faustina explained that she received the prayer after wrestling with the challenge of trusting in Jesus, and where he was guiding her life.

Here’s a video, from Ascension Presents, explaining the Story behind this great prayer.

What I find so reassuring is that Sister explains that she received the prayer. It wasn’t as if she set out to write it - she even admits that she wasn’t someone who often prayed Litany’s or Novenas. It appears as if this is a prayer specifically given for our times, people need this prayer now more than ever.

The Litany of Trust

From the belief that I have to earn Your love... Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear that I am unlovable... Deliver me, Jesus.

From the false security that I have what it takes... Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear that trusting you will leave me more destitute... Deliver me, Jesus.

From all suspicion of your words and promises... Deliver me, Jesus.

From the rebellion against childlike dependency on You... Deliver me, Jesus.

From refusals and reluctances in accepting Your will... Deliver me, Jesus.

From anxiety about the future... Deliver me, Jesus.

From resentment or excessive preoccupation with the past... Deliver me, Jesus.

From restless self-seeking in the present moment... Deliver me, Jesus.

From disbelief in Your love and presence... Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being asked to give more than I have... Deliver me, Jesus.

From the belief that my life has no meaning or worth... Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of what love demands... Deliver me, Jesus.

From discouragement... Deliver me, Jesus.

That You are continually holding me, sustaining me, loving me... Jesus, I trust in You.

That Your love goes deeper than my sins and failings and transforms me... Jesus, I trust in You.

That not knowing what tomorrow brings is an invitation to lean on You... Jesus, I trust in You.

That You are with me in my suffering... Jesus, I trust in You.

That my suffering, united to Your own, will bear fruit in this life and the next... Jesus, I trust in You.

That You will not leave me orphan, that You are present in Your Church... Jesus, I trust in You.

That Your plan is better than anything else... Jesus, I trust in You.

That You always hear me and in Your goodness always respond to me... Jesus, I trust in You.

That You give me the grace to accept forgiveness and to forgive others... Jesus, I trust in You.

That You give me all the strength I need for what is asked... Jesus, I trust in You.

That my life is a gift... Jesus, I trust in You.

That You will teach me to trust You... Jesus, I trust in You.

That You are my Lord and my God... Jesus, I trust in You.

That I am Your beloved one... Jesus, I trust in You.

How to get started praying the Litany of Trust

Morning Prayer

The morning is a sacred time. I love this quote by Saint John Mary Vianney: “We must take great care never to do anything before having said our morning prayers. The devil once declared that if he could have the first moment of the day, he was sure of all the rest.”

Starting your day with the full Litany of Trust is a bold action to set your day up for trust in Jesus. Think about how this will set your heart for trust in whatever you have approaching you the rest of your day. It should only take about five minutes to pray! There is also an audio version that you can listen to as you get ready.

Pray a couple of lines throughout the day

A great practice is to keep the Litany with you, and pray a couple lines of it throughout your day. Starting each hour with one of the lines will be a continued reminder and practice to spend your day trusting him. You can set a reminder on your phone or schedule an email to hit your inbox with one of the lines:

From the belief that I have to earn Your love … Deliver me, Jesus.

This is a great way to ‘pray without ceasing’ and come back to him all day.

A Self-Guided Retreat

Sr. Faustina has written a self-guided 30-day retreat around the Litany of Trust. Similar to other self-guided retreats, the book provides reading and reflection each day to help you take a bigger step towards trust. This is a wonderful practice to do alone, or with a community or group.

You can learn more about Sr. Faustina’s prayer, and her retreat book here

Provide it to Others

One of the Sister’s practices is to keep copies of this prayer close by, and hand it out to others often. Providing this to loved ones and friends is an easy way to help them trust more and a simple way to evangelize. See our PDF download to keep a few on you or in your car.

Conclusion to the Litany of Trust

“I realized this wasn’t just going to be for me, but other hearts would need this as well.” - Sr. Faustina Maria Pia

This wonderful prayer will help you to rely more on Jesus and less on yourself. It will help you with your little struggles during the good times, but it will also provide you with great comfort and confidence in the heat of your greatest struggles. Trust is core to our relationships and core to our faith in Jesus, and this is a gift to help that trust grow.

This prayer was written for you, use it often!

I pray this litany of trust every day and started it about one or two months ago.
Very profound and applies to me and some of my concerns.
