More information about the Novena to St Jude
Who was St Jude?
St. Jude was one of the twelve Apostles. The gospels of Mark (3:18) and Matthew (10:3) refer to him as Thaddeus (a surname meaning "friendly or "loving"), possibly to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot, our Lord's betrayer! In the Last Supper, John's gospel refers to him as "Judas... not the Iscariot" (14:22).
St. Jude is known as Saint James the Less's brother. According to tradition, he also wrote the epistle that bears his name in the New Testament, though this is not certain.
In his letter, he emphasized the importance of maintaining faith in apostolic teachings in the face of heresies through fraternal charity, prayer, and loving obedience to God. According to the historian Eusebius, he assisted in the election of his brother St. Simeon as Bishop of Jerusalem in 62 A.D.
St. Jude is said to have preached the gospel in Judea, Samaria, Libya, and Mesopotamia before being martyred in Armenia, which was part of Persia at the time. According to one account, he used an image of Jesus' face that our Lord had pressed on a cloth to cure the King of Edessa's leprosy in Mesopotamia.
The king was so impressed that he, along with much of his family and kingdom, converted to Christianity. What a picture is worth a thousand words! St. Jude also converted a large number of people to Christianity.

What is the significance of St. Jude holding a medallion?
The medallion features an image of Jesus known as "The Image of Edessa." King Abgar of Edessa (now in Turkey) was afflicted with a serious illness. He'd heard about Jesus healing others and begged Jesus to heal him. Jesus pressed His face against a piece of cloth and handed it to St. Jude to give to King Abgar. King Abgar was healed after receiving the cloth. This scene can be seen in one of the stained glass windows at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, which also houses the National Shrine of St. Jude.
What is the significance of the flame above St. Jude's head?
This is known as "The Tongue of Flame," and it depicts the Holy Spirit descended on St. Jude and the other Apostles on Pentecost. "They saw what appeared to be fire tongues that separated and came to rest on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in tongues as the Spirit enabled them" (Acts 2:3-4).
Why does St. Jude dress in green?
St. Jude is dressed in green because it represents hope and renewal. In difficult or seemingly hopeless times, we turn to St. Jude, our Patron of Hope, just as foliage and flowers spring to life in spring.
What is St. Jude's connection to Jesus?
There are various theories as to how St. Jude is related to Jesus. St. Jude is sometimes referred to as "Judas the brother of James," while others refer to him as "Judas the son of James." According to Galatians 1:19, James is Jesus' brother. However, in the Gospel of Matthew 13:55, St. Jude is mentioned as Jesus' brother. "Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't His mother's name Mary, and His brothers' names James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?" Regardless, we know St. Jude was an Apostle of Jesus and that they had a close relationship.
How did St. Jude die?
On October 28, 65, St. Jude was martyred alongside St. Simon in Persia (their feast days). There are various accounts of how St. Jude died. Some say he was beaten to death and beheaded, while others say he was hacked to death, which is why he is frequently depicted with a club or an axe. The remains of St. Jude are housed in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Is St. Jude Thaddeus related to Judas Iscariot?
No! The names "Jude" and "Judas" are Greek translations of Judah, a common Biblical name. Despite their namesake, St. Jude is not the one who betrayed Jesus.
How did St. Jude's Novena begin?
Following his death, many people prayed to St. Jude for intercession. When Jesus directed St. Bridget of Sweden in a vision to turn to St. Jude with great faith and confidence, He inspired her devotion to St. Jude. "In accordance with his surname, Thaddeus, the amiable or loving, he will show himself most willing to give help," Christ said in a vision to St. Bridget. St. Jude was widely venerated during the Middle Ages, but he may have faded into obscurity due to confusion between his name and that of Judas Iscariot.
St. Jude Thaddeus was relatively unknown to the general Catholic population in the United States in the early twentieth century. Claretian Fr. James Tort held the first devotional services to St. Jude in 1929 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in southeast Chicago; by the end of the year, the country's only National Shrine of St. Jude would be firmly established. The devotions to St. Jude spread gradually from that tiny corner of Chicago to the rest of the country. Thousands of men, women, and children attended novenas at the Shrine during the Great Depression and World War II, and devotion to the "patron saint of hopeless causes" spread throughout the country.
