St. Maximillian Kolbe is the example of a heroic faith. Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish priest who died as prisoner 16770 in Auschwitz, on August 14, 1941.

When he was younger, he had a vision. In the vision, he was approached by an angel of the Lord who presented him with two crowns. A Red Crown, representing a Martyrs' death, and a White Crown, representing purity. St. Maximillian was asked to choose one of them, and he took both.

During WWII he was arrested and sent to Auschwitz. When a prisoner escaped from the camp, the Nazis selected 10 innocent prisoners to be killed by starvation in reprisal for the escape. One of the 10 selected to die, Franciszek Gajowniczek, began to cry: My wife! My children! I will never see them again! At this Maximilian Kolbe stepped forward and asked to die in his place. His request was granted.
