Joy
The Litany of Joy is a wonderful prayer to grow in the virtue of Joy.
Daily life is is challenging, and not always happy. But we are called to be joyful. Jesus calls us to be joyful. To exude Joy in all circumstances - both good and bad.
In a moment of prayer Colette Dills was inspired to write the Litany of Joy. Praying the Litany of Joy is a tangible way to learn and practice the virtue of Joy.
The Litany of Joy
From my need to be in control, deliver me Jesus.
From the distorted view of what will make me happy, deliver me Jesus.
From disappointment and discouragement in the weakness of others, deliver me Jesus.
From disappointment and discouragement in my own weakness, deliver me Jesus.
From letting the evil one control my reactions throughout my day, deliver me Jesus.
From the lie that You are far from me, deliver me Jesus.
From the moments when I place my identity in someone or something else, deliver me Jesus.
From my fear of discomfort and suffering, deliver me Jesus.
From the lie that I am not enough, deliver me Jesus.
From the lie that You are not enough and cannot fulfill the longings of my heart, deliver me Jesus.
In the times I am feeling the weight of the Cross, Jesus come be my joy.
In times of confusion, Jesus come be my joy.
When I am afraid, Jesus come be my joy.
In the times I feel overwhelmed, Jesus come be my joy.
In the times when I feel Your peace, Jesus come be my joy.
In times of friendship and community, Jesus come be my joy.
In times of misunderstanding and hurt, Jesus come be my joy.
When I am jealous, Jesus come be my joy.
When I am angry, Jesus come be my joy.
When I want to give up, Jesus come be my joy.
When I am fighting temptation, Jesus come be my joy.
In times of planning and work, Jesus come be my joy.
In times when I am tired, Jesus come be my joy.
In times of doubt, Jesus come be my joy.
When I cannot see the future ahead of me, Jesus come be my joy.
At all times, seasons, and moments in my life, Jesus come be my joy.
Amen.

How to get started praying the Litany of Joy
Morning Prayer
The morning is a sacred time. I love this quote by Saint John Mary Vianney: “We must take great care never to do anything before having said our morning prayers. The devil once declared that if he could have the first moment of the day, he was sure of all the rest.”
Starting your day with the full Litany of Joy is a bold action to set your day up for Joy with Jesus. Think about how this will set your heart for Joy, regardless whatever you have approaching you the rest of your day. It should only take about five minutes to pray!
Pray a couple of lines throughout the day
A great practice is to keep the Litany with you, and pray a couple lines of it throughout your day. Starting each hour with one of the lines will be a continued reminder and practice to spend your day focusing on Joy. You can set a reminder on your phone or schedule an email to hit your inbox with one of the lines:
In the times I feel overwhelmed, Jesus come be my joy.
This is a great way to ‘pray without ceasing’ and come back to him all day.
Provide it to Others
Keep copies of this with you to give out as needed. Providing this to loved ones and friends is an easy way to help them trust more and a simple way to evangelize. See our PDF download to keep a few on you or in your car.
